onArcade

Excerpt

onArcade is great value. The basic script price is at the high end, but the ongoing cost is extremely low. If your capable of adding games yourself, and making basic changes, its definately worth serious consideration.

First Impressions

This script comes to you from Eveterm OÜ, and its been around for a while now. Recent news indicates some updates to the languages support and some small incremental changes. The forums appear to be active and support is readily available. All the key features of the script are listed on the website, and they include link exchange, high score system etc. something you still dont find in every script. A list of sites using the script are available for you to check out also.

Demo

I was able to take a peak at the admin area and the frontend, the later of which is pretty straight forward, pretty standard column based layout. The admin demo was actually outdated, using the older 2.0 version of the script, rather than 2.1. Something they might want to fix up ;) All the changes are made in the various sections - content, members and settings.

Features

Nothing in the features will jump out out as revolutionary, but nothing mission critical is missing either. I would like to see more variation to news/blogging features etc, but the basics are there.

Quality

I couldnt check out the support area cause it was passworded, just to get a feel on the overall quality and  any outstanding major bugs, but the script is at version 2.1, so you would imagine most of the major kinks would be ironed out. Its best to ask around and get some feedback.

Pricing

The pricing area is very basic and there is only one option.

Standard Licence - 44 Euros - Basic script, not encoded, comes with 1000 games.

That pricing places the basic script at the slighly higher end, but you do have to keep in mind the 1000 games. That could easily set you back $40 seperately.

Support

There are two support options - forums or email. You can usually find your answers in the forums so always do a search there first. I cant vouch for the email support, but again, ask around before you buy and youll get a general impression as to the quality of their support. Talk Arcades is great for that. In terms of upgrades. The entire 2.x.x line will be free upgrades. Upgrades from 2.x to 3.x will involve an additional fee. Support also appears to be lifetime.

Gamepacks

1000 games are included with the basic licence. There doesnt appear to be any other gamepacks available from there website.

Copyright

You are free to remove the copyright link once you have bought the commercial licence. That can seriously be a significant saving with some companies charging $50 or more for removal.

Installation

Not officially offered as a service but responses to forum queries that I read indicated it could be done. Not sure on a price.

Other Details

Nothing else to add at this time.

Overall

Pretty good value overall, and thats where onArcade shines. They dont charge for support, its lifetime, free upgrades of the 2.x series, 1000 free games, the freedom to remove copyright. Essentially if your after a basic script thats not going to cost you fortune over the long run, onArcade is worth serious consideration.
